Shipping containers are large steel containers that transport freight over the ocean, or via road on trucks and trains.
As people look for more affordable and sustainable housing solutions, many have started repurposing these shipping containers into homes, offices and storage units. At around $5000 for a container, it’s a less expensive but highly functional way to build a home or secure storage shed.
And they don’t have to be tiny houses! You can connect several shipping containers together and cut out walls while still maintaining a strong structure. The containers can even stack on top of each other to create a second storey. This makes it possible to design and build a large, unique home or office.
As well as being less expensive than a typical house or office, shipping containers can withstand strong weather, so they’re suitable in areas that experience cyclones and other weather events.
However, as they’re made of steel, these containers need extra focus on sealing and waterproofing to prevent rust and other problems especially around the water inlet and electrical areas.
When Shipping Containers Have Problems
